Answered questions
- templating vs templates? can templating be translated as "templating tool"?
- Per Cheng Hu's explanation, templating includes the meaning of "creating and using templates". So to be accurate, translate "Creating and using templates" (模板的创建和使用) instead of "Introduction to templating" in the title, but still use the translation of "templates" in the context where templating occurs as a noun or an adjective.
- area vs field?
- a Chinese word "区域" is used for both. To distinguish them, use “区域” for area, and "域" for field. (Using "input box" for field is not proper as on the Fields page.)It's better to specify the kind of field in the context, for example, a date field is easier to be translated into Chinese than a single word "field".
- UI icons need be translated?
- keep them until the UI strings are translated
- property & attribute
- a Chinese word is used for both. There are four places with "attribute(s)" on the My first template page:
- Script is written in FreeMarker, JSP or a custom templating language. The script instructs the renderer where to place the content and also contains placeholders for content attributes such as headings and images.
- Change to "elements".

- Provide the name of the area that should be rendered in the
name

[@cms.area name="main"]
,name
is a parameter andmain
is a value.

- translate the link text into Chinese. Obsolete links are used in My first template:
- System objects are available to your script implicitly.
- Point the link to Templating support objects. Please fix also the corresponding link in the 4.5 Introduction to templating by linking to Templating support objects page in DOCS45 space.

- repository = storage repository? material repository? template repository? which one is better?
- Per Cheng's suggestion, use "content repository": 内容库
- Pulse
- Keep the English word. On its first occurrence, it can be translated as "the Pulse messaging center (Pulse信息中心)".
- What is a light dialog?
- Refer to Use a light dialog to collect quick input. The light dialog can be translated as "simple and quick dialog (简捷对话)".

- Template prototype > Available areas: what is a carousel? what is a category cloud component? as in
base
uses the full width of the page and can contain a large carousel or category cloud component.- Carousel teaser component rotates several teasers. The rotation happens either automatically or when the user clicks the slider controls. Carousel is a Magnolia specific term but this type of page element is very common, also known as slider. Here is a jQuery slider. The translation for slider is 幻灯片 (slideshow). But if we want to have some "Magnolia specific" translation, we can add the word carousel in it as "圆盘幻灯片" (carousel slideshow).
- Category cloud is a derivative of tag cloud (Wikipedia: 标签云), "a weighted list of tags displayed as a group where popular tags are given more visual weight than less popular tags. The visual weight is accomplished by making popular tags larger or bolder." (Finnotype: Category cloud with images). The translation principle of category cloud can be the same with tag cloud, so it's 分类云 (literal translation).
- Template prototype > Area definitions: what is a message bundle key? as in
description
sets the message bundle key for the area description.Antti: Key-value pairs are the building blocks of a hash table data structure, a common programming concept, see: 哈希表 (Wikipedia). In a Magnolia message bundle file, key is the left hand side of the equal sign. The key identifies the message string displayed in the UI. In the example below,
dialogs.paragraphs.content.stkTextImage.label
is a key whileText and Image
is a value.dialogs.paragraphs.content.stkTextImage.label=Text and Image
Yuan: As indicated in that Wikipedia page, we can use "关键字" for "key(s)". So a message bundle key can be literally translated as "消息包关键字".
- what is the proper translation for "predicate"? Is it assertion? as in Template prototype - Component inheritance:
AllComponentsAndResourcesInheritancePredicate
: Predicate for component inheritance that includes all components.- Antti: Java 6 SE documentation does not translate predicate. We should use the English word too. Compare:
- Can "stage" be translated as "platform (平台)" in the following sentence? Or should we just use the original meaning as such in stage (theatre)?
- Use-case driven templates: Page types are based on common use cases such as Home, Section, News, Events and more. Components include teasers, stages, promos, lists and more.
- Antti: Stage like in a theater. It is a large component that puts the most important content right in front of your eyes, a focal point.
Unanswered questions
- Is the word "header" meaning the same thing in "Page Header" and "htmlheader area"?
- Antti: They are not always the same thing. Please provide the page where these terms appear. Can't say for sure without seeing the context.
- Header can be at least two different things:
- Header area at the top of the page that typically contains things like logo and search box.
- Request header passed between a browser and a Web server. The user doesn't usually see the headers unless they want to capture request and response headers.
- Header can be at least two different things:
- Yuan: Page Header / Section Header occurs as a component. See Extending the stkArticle template. HTML header occurs in the STK UI strings: areas.templates.htmlHeader.title=HTML header. I understand both of the meanings, but I'm not sure which one the header is referring to in "HTML header". I found an HTML header on w3school. If it's correct, I'll use the corresponding translation as on w3school Chinese page.
- Antti: The Extending the stkArticle template page mentions several "headers":
htmlHeader
: This area renders thehead
element and its child elements such astitle
,meta
andscript
. This is the stuff that you find between the<head>...</head>
tags when you view the page source. Most of these elements are not visible to the visitor, only thetitle
element is. See thehead
element description in Chinese Wikipedia. The Wikipedia article is more correct than our naming since this area doesn't really render a "header", it renders the head element.- Page header: This is a component. Here the term "header" is used correctly. It is not a Magnolia specific term. A page header is commonly used in printing or typography for any material separated from the main body that appears at the top of a page. Unfortunately Wikipedia doesn't have a Chinese translation but you should use a term that is close to the printing/typography term.
sectionHeader
: This is an area that is rendered to visitors as a blue box in STK. See for example the Articles section page (which also has an example of a page header component). The section header is inherited by all child pages in the section. It usually contains some text that is common to all pages in the section. I would translate it with the same "header" word as the page header but add the word "section" to make sure readers understand that this is for sections and the other one is for pages.
- Antti: They are not always the same thing. Please provide the page where these terms appear. Can't say for sure without seeing the context.
- How can "extras" (area) be translated? Does it mean similar thing to the extras in newspaper, meaning something that is important and temporarily added because it happens suddenly? Or just meaning "additional things"?
- Antti: Additional things. The content in the main area is more important than content in the extras area.
- Yuan: It seems that the extras area is a special concept in Magnolia. There is no existing translation for it. So I'm going to use the literal translation until a better choice is provided.
- Antti: Yes, it's a Magnolia specific term.
